This map depicts the relative soil erosion hazard for Monterey County, California. Erosion can be defined as the wearing away of the land surface by flowing water, waves, or wind, or by such process as mass wasting and corrosion. Water and wind erosion are important in assessing the health of the soil and in assessing the soil's potential for different uses. Removal of increasing amounts of soil increasingly alters various properties and capabilities of the soil. Properties and qualities affected include bulk density, permeability, organic matter content, tilth, and can degrade surface water quality. In Monterey County, farming is a major source of employment and revenue; hence, protecting the county's soil resources is important.
<purpose>The purpose of this map is to provide a comparison of relative soil erosion hazards for regional planning studies.</purpose>

<horizpar>This file uses 1:24,000 scale mapping by the NRCS. The following accuracy report is from their SSURGO metadata for Monterey County:
The accuracy of these digital data is based upon their compilation to base maps that meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The difference in positional accuracy between the soil boundaries and special soil features locations in the field and their digitized map locations is unknown. The locational accuracy of soil delineations on the ground varies with the transition between map units.
For example, on long gently sloping landscapes the transition occurs gradually over many feet. Where landscapes change abruptly from steep to level, the transition will be very narrow. Soil delineation boundaries and special soil features generally were digitized within 0.01 inch of their locations on the digitizing source. The digital map elements are edge matched between data sets. The data along each quadrangle edge are matched against the data for the adjacent quadrangle. Edge locations generally do not deviate from centerline to centerline by more than 0.01 inch.</horizpar>

<srccontr>Subjective erosion hazard ratings for the soil groups in the USDA soil survey of Monterey County, California.</srccontr>

<procstep>
<procdesc>Soils are rated as to their erosion hazard potential in the Soil Survey of Monterey County, California (Cook, 1978). Cook classified the erosion potential into several classes, ranging from very high to minimal based on detailed field mapping and laboratory testing. For this study, these groups were combined into high, moderate, and low categories. The Soil Survey Geographic database for Monterey County database (NRCS, 1999) includes georeferenced digital soil mapping units. A table of the soil units in Monterey County and their subjective soil erosion was manually created and saved as a tab-delimited text file. This text file was joined to the SSURGO DBF file using ArcView 3.2a. The resultant polygons were dissolved into high, moderate, and low classes.</procdesc>
